Advanced Hockey Scouting Course

This advanced hockey scouting course is the follow-up to our Hockey Scouting Course. Students who complete Part I can continue here. This course becomes even more focused on the practical which includes completing more game reports.

Participants of this course will be submitting game reports. We dive into processes behind ratings and rankings. We will get into more detail about the day to day working life of a typical NHL Scout.

After successful completion of our Scouts Training Courses, we will assist top students as they attempt to land their first scouting opportunity. HockeyProspect.com has had many of our scouts progress to paid scouting jobs with teams in the OHL, WHL, QMJHL, USHL, NAHL and the NHL.

What’s Covered in the Advanced Hockey Scouting Course

The advanced hockey scouting course goes well beyond the fundamentals taught in Part I. This is where you move from learning the traits scouts evaluate to actually doing the job. You’ll submit real game reports on real players, following the same structure our own scouts use when filing for HockeyProspect.com.

You’ll also go deeper into the ranking and rating process itself: how a single game report turns into a ranking, how rankings get compared and debated across a scouting staff, and how a director of scouting weighs conflicting reports from different scouts covering the same player. This is the part of the job most outsiders never see.

Finally, this advanced hockey scouting course walks through the day-to-day working life of a typical NHL scout: the travel schedule, how a scouting season is planned around the draft calendar, and how scouts balance live viewings against video work. For an official look at how NHL teams structure their amateur scouting process, the NHL Central Scouting Bureau publishes its own player list and process publicly.

Who Should Take This Advanced Hockey Scouting Course

This course is built for students who have already completed Part I, our Hockey Scouting Course. It assumes you already understand the basics of what scouts look for and how to structure a report. If you’re just getting started, begin with Part I first, then come back here once you’re ready to go deeper into the practical side of the job.
